Removing oxide layers

It is often necessary to remove tarnished or oxidized corrosion without affecting the metal surface. Lasers are used for precise removal of different corrosion layers and encrustations. Important for success is the right ablation threshold for each material. The Q-switched Nd-YAG laser emitting pulses of ns pulse duration at 1064 nm was found able to remove oxide layers, rust and dust,on raw materials (steels, aluminium, copper and their alloys) used in railway manufacturing and maintenance industries. The same removal technique has been applied to ablate surface contaminants produces by soot, enviromental pollution and smog directly in situ on some parts of railcars.
